Using Yoga Props

Support. We all need it sometimes. Maybe it's through using a prop to feel a pose in a new way. Maybe it's by stashing your class flow in your sound bowl so you can glance at it if you forget. Yoga supports whatever form of support you feel you need!

I was taught that knowing how to use props properly was the sign of an advanced yogi. But I feel like a lot of people feel like using props implies they aren't good enough, and that couldn't be further from the truth.

Blocks bring the ground to you so can still fully release into a pose even if you can't get to the ground by using the support of the block. Straps help you bend and align in ways may be difficult for you otherwise but that your body is capable of. Blankets and bolsters offer comfort so you can relax and enjoy the asana.

One of the best parts about props, besides making your practice feel so much deeper, is that they don't have to be fancy. You can easily use things from around your house, like blankets and pillows, even a robe strap or a large book. And when you practice at a yoga studio or gym, chances are they'll have props for you to try.

So don't be nervous, props make many poses much more comfortable and will help stretch your body in new ways. All I am saying, is give props a chance!
